We match apartment dwellers who have a commitment to learn and experience growing an organic vegetable garden but do not have access to a garden space and we pair them with homeowners who have an under-utilized sunny garden space to share.  By connecting these 2 communities together, we build robust and nutritious gardens that provide healthy abundant food for the apartment dweller and the homeowner.

This is for you if you’re a homeowner or renter with a sunny yard and …

  • You’ve got a front or backyard space that’s just sitting there, and you’d love to see it thriving again
  • You want a beautiful, lush garden without having to become the gardener
  • You love the idea of meeting good neighbours and building real community
  • You’d genuinely enjoy receiving a share of fresh organic veggies or cut flower blooms from your own space
  • You want to open your door and see abundance where there used to be “nothing”
  • You want it to feel simple, supported, and basically hands-free

This is for you if you’re an apartment dweller ready for a real garden and

  • You’re committed to growing food or flowers and you’re ready for more than windowsills and balconies
  • You want to be matched with a local, sunny garden space close to home
  • You’re excited to level up your skills in a true outdoor garden setting
  • You want to grow alongside a supportive community of new, novice, and experienced gardeners
  • You want fresh organic homegrown harvests and the pride that comes with them
  • You’re ready to learn what actually works, no matter where you’re starting from

Bottom line: if you’ve got the space, or you’ve got the passion, we’ll match the right people and help both of you grow something amazing together.

I loved watching how excited my gardener was this year. She loved her garden so much, I painted her a rock with her name on it!

Meet Camille and James

Camille and James, the dynamic duo behind Food 4 Thought, are passionate about sharing the joy of organic gardening and helping others achieve their own backyard success. Camille, originally from New Zealand, is an interior designer, abstract painter, and photographer who thrives in the garden during Vancouver’s summer months. For nearly 20 years, she’s been cultivating a thriving urban veggie garden alongside James, combining her love for nature and her dedication to encouraging others to grow and succeed.

James, a master organic vegetable gardener with deep roots in the Kootenays, brings 20 years of hands-on expertise gained from years of developing and honing his urban vegetable gardening skill set and seed-saving techniques. His in-depth knowledge of soil health, plant care, and garden design is the backbone of their abundant harvests. Through live weekly Q&A sessions, James offers practical advice, answers questions, and demystifies every stage of the growing process—from soil prep to winter garden care. Together, Camille’s motivational spirit and James’ expert guidance create the perfect environment for helping you cultivate a lush, nutrient-rich organic garden of your own. 🌱

Our gardeners are excited… here is more of what they had to say!

  • Finding purpose during my stress leave, building VERY strong connections and being part of the most supportive community in times of social isolation, meeting lovely Joanne and her family, learning new things and being motivated by constant (fun) challenges, feeling empowered by making my own decisions, being creative, being outside and getting dirty, eating delicious food. I honestly feel the food is just a byproduct of the 2 most important things: community building and finding purpose in the current challenging times.
  • I love having a garden to care for. To watch transform. It is creative and inspiring. A garden offers me so much more than I could ever imagine. It reminds me of my great grandmother and grandmother who both tended to their gardens daily. I am surprised with how much we can grow on a small piece of land, it’s truly a blessing. I am at awe with how fresh our produce is from the garden plot. Kale from our garden is way more tender and fresh than store bought. It fascinates me that everything we grow comes from a very small seed. It is kind of magical if you think about it. It’s a miracle. Mother Earth is amazing and offers us so much.
  • I have noticed that I am much more inspired in the kitchen to create meals that I would have otherwise not tried. I tried fresh figs for the first time and made tea from leaves and it was very delicious. I am now into canning and learning about how to take care of my gut with fermented foods. At the moment I have a fermentation station at home which includes carrots, cauliflower and corn. I also started kombucha inspired by a fellow gardener who gave me a starter. I am beyond grateful for this incredible garden space.
  • Excited to continue with the program and keep learning! Loved it last year!
  • I participated last Summer and it was an amazing experience I would not want to miss out this year
  • I love the feeling of growing food and I am super passionate about sustainable agriculture and building community.
  • It’s been a huge learning experience. I’ve really enjoyed seeing how the plants grow and discovering which plants grow best during which months. Of course, the food we’ve gotten from our own garden has been incredible and it keeps coming! Also, the other gardeners are really friendly, it’s been great getting to know them and being part of this gardening community.
  • A great help for my mental health during a difficult time.
  • Increased knowledge of gardening practices and methods
  • Way more fresh food I can eat each day than I would have been able to grow otherwise in my small balcony!
  • Eating fresh organic produce, fostering a lifelong love of growing food and desire to continue and teach others, meeting new friends and being part of a supportive community
  • Gardening is a nice break from being inside most of the day. It has given me more appreciation for food and taught me much about gardening. Thank you Camille and James for the opportunity!
  • I am eating more fresh produce, I feel more connected to the community in Kitsilano = physical and mental health benefits!
  • I feel like eating all the fresh veggies have had a positive impact on my health. Also, the act of growing the veggies makes me appreciate the effort that goes into growing food.

I love seeing vegetables growing so well in what were previously empty boxes of dirt.

Seeing the pride and excitement Sarah has with her garden. Getting to know our new gardener.

Connecting with community.

Love to see veggies growing where there weren't any before.
